Board Elections will take place at the AGM and we are now seeking nominations. Do you know someone who could share their skills and expertise as a Voscur Trustee?  We are pleased to invite you and your organisation to make nominations to the Voscur Board of Trustees.  Nominations must be made by 5pm on 16 November 2017.

The Voscur Board of Trustees play an important role in ensuring that the organisation adheres to its charitable objectives to:

  • build the capacity of third sector organisations and support their work;
  • facilitate partnership working between third sector, public and any other relevant bodies.

Asset mapping working paper

Magda Kowalik-Malcolm, who is a community development coordinator for South Bristol, as forwarded a link for a working paper on asset mapping.  Below is its abstract:

This working paper critically reviews some main aspects from asset based approaches highlights key strengths and weaknesses for future research/development. Drawing on a large body of reports and relevant literature we draw on different theoretical traditions and critiques, as well as practices and processes embedded within a broad range of approaches including, widely acknowledged frameworks such Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), Appreciative Inquiry (AI), Sustainable Livelihood Approaches (SLA) and Community Capitals Framework (CCF). Although these are presented as distinct approaches, there is a sense of evolution through them and many of them overlap (in terms of both theories and methodologies). We also include emerging frameworks, including geographical, socio-spatial, visual and creative approaches, stemming from a number of projects within AHRC’s Connected Communities programme and additional collaborations.

Back to Primary School event

Please find attached a very special event coming up at Victoria Park Primary School on Monday 13th November, 10:30am-12pm. The children are inviting over 55s to a social morning at their school where attendees will be served tea and biscuits and will have their portraits drawn by the children. They are also welcome to return the favour.

The Lantern Parade really needs you! 

This is an appeal to many of the people I know in Bemmy, and several who have previously volunteered for the Lantern Parade:  at this moment we are 40 volunteers short of the number we need to enable the Parade on Satrurday 9 December to go ahead.  For insurance purposes we have to position 70 volunteer stewards at the junctions along the route.

Would you be able to volunteer?  If you can’t, maybe you know someone else who can – a neighbour, a member of your group, a friend, colleague or family member?   Stewards need to be with us for a briefing by 3.30pm, and you’ll be finished by 6 pm.  An info sheet is attached to this mail, but we’ll send out more detail nearer the time.

Workshops have started in schools and community centres, and our small group of dedicated volunteers have raised the £19K+ it takes to run the project – now we need YOU to help us make it happen.

FrANC AGM on Sunday 5th November, followed by tour of The Underfall Yard

This year’s FrANC Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held in the  Education & Meeting Room at The Underfall Yard,  Cumberland Road  starting at 2:00pm next Sunday (5th November).

As advised previously, the AGM will be followed by an hour-long guided tour of The Underfall Yard.  We hope to see as many FrANC members as possible at the AGM.  Complimentary tea/coffee will be available during the proceedings.

Protect Our Parks

You may know that there has been a petition from the Bristol Parks Forum asking BCC to think again about its proposals for cutting expenditure on parks in response to reductions in finances from central government.    That petition now exceeds 3500 signatures and will trigger a debate of full council on Wednesday, 14 November.

The Full Council meeting is at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 14 November at City Hall.

The deadline for written statements is 12 noon on Monday 13 November (it will not I am afraid be possible to accept any statements submitted after
that time).

For clarity, it would be helpful if any emails with statements sent in to
democratic.services@bristol.gov.uk could headed up as “Statement for Full Council – 14 November 2017”

A second petition, to ban parking on pavements in line with London, closes on 30 November.   So far it has 653 electronic signatures (31 October) and an unknown number on paper.    If you have been collecting signatures, please return your petition sheets to Ben Barker, c/o Southville Centre, Beauley Road, BS3 1QG no later than Monday, 27 November.

Sleep Out 2017 – In Aid of Homeless Young People

I’m doing the Sleep Out 2017 on the 15th November in aid of 1625 Independent People, a fantastic bunch of people who help young homeless people find some accommodation and start to get control of their lives in all sorts of ways: http://www.1625ip.co.uk/Support-Us/1625ip-Sleep-Out-2017.aspx

As you all are aware, homelessness is rising at an alarming rate in Bristol and amongst the worst affected are young people who often have no choice but to leave home and find themselves on the streets. I don’t need to tell you how risky this is for anyone let alone if they are young and may have just been through a severe trauma. Last year 1625IP saw almost 2500 young homeless people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire – half of them were offered some form of accommodation.
