NEWSLETTER 28:17 on South Bristol Toy Library

What is South Bristol Toy Library?

South Bristol Toy Library is a community resource where you can borrow a changing range of toys for children as they grow.

Come to a session – become a member

Would you like to borrow low cost, high quality toys for your children?   We have hundreds of different toys to choose from for children aged 0 to 12.   Membership is just £10 a year with hire costing 20p to £2 for two weeks.   We are open fortnightly on Tuesdays (10-12) and Saturdays (10.30-12) at United Reformed Church on West Street.   Come along for free to see what it’s all about.

New trustees wanted – recruiting a Chair

We are urgently seeking a new committee member who would be supported into the Committee Chair role by our existing Chair (who is moving from the area) and committee.   The Chair role is flexible, rewarding and varied and is a fun and play-focused way to get more experience of running a charity.   It would require around five hours per week.   We have recently recruited a new outreach and development worker so it is an exciting time to join the team.   The local toy library idea started nearly two years ago and our library sessions have been running for a year.   They are becoming busier than ever and we have over 150 members who at any one time have around 50 items out on loan.   Please get in touch to have an informal chat.

Change to sessions

This month we made the difficult decision to stop running sessions from Oasis Academy Marksbury Road and move the entire Toy Library operation to URC Hall from August. The main reason for this was a lack of volunteers to cover all three regular sessions, as well as to concentrate and focus on improving our service from URC Hall.

Could you volunteer?

We need more committed people to help us run the library.   We are especially looking for reliable, trustworthy people who can lead sessions.   You would need to be able to commit to at least two sessions a month (four hours per session).   Contact the Toy Library to find out more.

Donate toys

If you have good quality second hand toys you would like to donate them please get in touch.   Toys must be working and have all their parts – we don’t want broken and damaged toys.   If you think the toy is good enough to hire then we’d love to hear from you.

Help us fundraise

We are a very low cost organisation.   Our regular expenses are room hire and buying toys.   If you know of a local business who might support us or ideas for raising funds then please get in touch.

Future sustainability and development

We have recently secured some funding to pay someone to work with us to evaluate where we have got to and help us plan for the future.   We want to make sure the library is providing the service people want and helping the most children to play.   You will start seeing us out and about at events in the summer to recruit more members and volunteers so do come and say hello.

Contact us

Please see http://southbristoltoylibrary. co.uk for more information or contact us at hello@southbristoltoylibrary.c o.uk for an informal chat about any of the above.

Editor’s Note: Ideas are being developed for a repair cafe to be launched later this year (fingers crossed!!).   Like the Toy Library, this will probably be based at the URC on West Street.    The Repair Cafe will bring together people who can fix things and things that need fixing.    This may mean that even some broken toys will be useful to the Toy Library, but not just yet.    See future GBCP NEWSLETTERs for future developments.
